Obeah is a form of witchcraft or sorcery. Christophine practiced obeah in the novel. In Antoinette's case, her husband invokes obeah; she eventually succumbs to the madness and spiritual death gained through Carribean magic or obeah. In addition, this story directly parallels the novel Jane Eyre
