Fire serves as a symbol of rebellion in the novel, Wide Sargasso Sea. The fire at Coulibri is caused by an act of retribution.... it is an act of defiance carried out by the black community. Antoinette's world changes as a result of the fire, and her own dreams of setting fire to Thornfield Hall become a symbol of her own emotional rebellion.
