What happened to Bill in chapter 3? what are the evidence

One Ear breaks loose and starts to run toward the wolves. Bill knows the wolves will tear him to pieces. He grabs his rifle to go and protect One Ear but is killed by the wolves. We hear one gunshot in the distance and then silence.
