Where the red fern grows why is grandpa's coon trap ''foolproof''?

Racoons are curious and bright, shiny objects catch their attention. Grandpa uses a shiny piece of tin to attract the coons. He learned this as a child when his pet racoon stole anything shiny within his grasp...... and his coon never let them go.
