A good source of internal conflict in this story might be the determination of Billy. Although he is not affluent or naturally skilled, he overcomes obstacles by showing "grit" and saving for two years in order to buy his dogs. He loves them dearly, and he showed it by dealing with the uncertainty and hardship.

An external conflict Billy faces is when he, Old Dan and Little Ann are out coon hunting and come across a mountain lion.

Another example of external conflict would be when Billy attended school in town and was harassed by the other students.
