Connie's mother questions Connie's appearance and behavior so frequently that Connie often wishes her mother dead, and that "she herself was dead and it was all over." This statement foreshadows Connie's implied death at the end of the story.

The author uses foreshadowing when Arnold makes comments to Connie like "come inside you where it's all secret", and that he will show her "what love is like." These statements foreshadow Connie being raped.
