What attitude towards education do mother and son share, and what causes them to regard it this way?

Nyokabi and Njoroge show their high regard for education from the beginning of the novel. Education is a valued commodity, which is not often attained by those who cannot afford it. Nyokabi, however, sees education as a valuable resource for her son, and though the family cannot afford his schooling, she is determined to find a way. As a result, she places expectations on her son.... rules that must be followed, so Njoroge understands the family's sacrifice, and in turn, their expectations of him.
