    Food is very important to Constance. What do you think food symbolizes for her? How does Charles alter her relationship to food?

    In the novel, as in much of western history, food has been the domain of women. “Food of any kind was precious to Constance” because it provides her with an identity, a sense of control, and a way to express love. It also provides her with an escape from reality. When Constance starts thinking about the unpleasant prospect of putting Uncle Julian in a hospital she suddenly says, “Shall I put walnuts in the applesauce?”
