Elliot has received bad news about the sudden demise of his Mami Ginny. He shares the sad news with his cousin Yaz while taking breakfast. Elliot is a wounded war veteran while Yaz is a professor. During the time of conversation, a colleague of Yaz arrives and Elliot requests him to translate an Arabic phrase which has haunted him for years. When Elliot and Yaz are struggling to come to terms with the grief, Odessa, Elliot’s mother gets into an online forum that supports crack cocaine addicts. Since he left the war in Iraq, Elliot has been troubled by a ghost that appears to him regularly.
In the internet forum, a new member called Fountainhead logs in and starts bragging about his wealth. Fountainhead is also an addict. However, he is derided by Orangutan and Chutes&Ladders forcing him to leave the forum. Orangutan has moved to her home country Japan where she teaches English. Chutes&Ladders flies to Japan to meet her. Most of the characters in the play are addicts. Odessa and Fountainhead are addicts and plan for a meeting to address the issue of addiction and recovery.
The play is based on the majority of characters who are struggling with the addiction. Most of these characters know one another through an online chatroom created to support drug addicts. Besides, these characters are haunted by excruciating past experiences. The author is trying to show how addiction is disparaging. Addiction is costly and can render one poor.
