I think that the main idea or theme is faith. During the course of the novel, Melba was faced with many obstacles in the fight for integration/equality. She was tempted many times to quit, as many people would be, but she chose to fight through the end. Why? Because she had a Lord she was fighting for; specifically, THE Lord. Her faith pulled her through many rough spots of her year at Central High School. For example, she had wanted to kill herself at one point, but realizing it was a sin, she chose to stay alive and keep fighting. The belief in a lord to fight for helped Melba to overcome the obstacles of integration and segregation thrown at her.
