The narrator
The narrator of the stories is representative of the author himself; he is Spokane and Coeur d’Alene Indian. He reveals some events of his life which are of high importance to him. Among these are his relationship with his father and the circumstances of the death of his father. And his own experience concerning medical treatment.
The narrator’s father
The narrator’s father is an old man. It is stated that he is an alcoholic, and his way of life led him to his feet being cut off, which led to a faster death.
Leonard Elmore
Leonard Elmore is an eighty-five year old man who served during the Second World War with the narrator’s grandfather Adolph. Leonard Elmore tells the narrator everything he remembers of the day when the grandfather was killed.
The narrator’s wife
The wife of the narrator is the minor character, but it is obvious that she cares about her husband. When he started losing his hearing she was in Italy, and as soon as she finds out about the troubles of her husband she returns home.
