O Me! O Life

In the third line, the speaker adds himself to the pathetic crowd of the "faithless and foolish." What effect does this have on the reader

In my opinion, the poet's addition of himself provides the reader with a way of likening the poem to their own experiences, it gives us a personal reference. Whitman is asking a question.... which he answers as well.
