What comparison is Thoreau making referring to "sleepers" and what is his point

Comes from "Where I Lived, And What I Lived For" the section I'm talking about starts with "...I went to the woods because..."

Thoreau reference to 'sleepers' is a pun. The word 'sleepers' not only applies to the act of sleeping, but its other definition meaning wooden railroad ties.
