Vathek
The main character of the novel, Vathek is a Caliph of Abassides, who came to have enormous power at a young age. He is described as having a striking appearance, especially his eyes. Giving into the pleasure and sin, he devises a plan together with his mother to gain even more powers, of the supernatural sorts. His desires will become his damnation.
Carathis
Carathis is Vathek's mother and a mastermind behind the Vathek's desire for power. She devises the plan for him to gain supernatural powers and encourages him in the cruelty. She could be seen as a main reason of his demise.
Giaour
A demon, or jinn, in disguise, Giaour presents himself to Vathek as an Indian merchant, who helps him in his quest for power and the fire palace.
Nouronihar
Nouronihar appears in the middle of the novel and makes Vathek fall in love with her and break the code of hospitality of her Emir father. She is promised to her cousin, but later decides to follow Vathek in his quest and finally his damnation.
