Uncle Tom's Cabin

In the book Uncle Tom's Cabin since St. Clare is so against slavery, why doesn’t he return Tom to his family?

Returning Tom to his family would only put him in the hands of other slave-owners. St. Clare actually had planned to sign papers for Tom's freedom but was killed in a bar fight before he could do this.
