In chapter 7 of the book Uncle Tom's Cabin Mr. Shelby says to Tom, "My good boy,... the Lord know you say the truth; and if I was able to help it, all the world shouldn't but you." For what reasons do you believe of disbelieve that sincerity of Mr. Shelby's statement?

I think he is sincere. Unfortunately he doesn't have enough strength in his convictions to save Tom. He projects much of his wife's regret onto Tom. Mr. Shelby however refused to sacrifice his own holdings to save Tom.
