how does Cassy discover Simon's fears and weaknesses?

Cassey is an educated and clever woman. Although she is Legree's sex slave, she seems to have some kind of hold on him. She understands his rituals and his fears. Cassy, for example, knows that Simon is afraid of the "haunted garret" in his own house. She and Emmeline are able to hide there knowing Simon would not look there.
