Instead of complying, why didn't Louis just run away before the Japanese got his leg injured?

In actuality, it would have been almost impossible for Louis to run away and remain free. He was weak from lack of food, battered by torture, and he was suffering from a leg injury he received while performing forced labor. Louis also cared deeply about his comrades and know that the Japanese would inflict their anger on his fellow prisoners if he escaped.
