Uglies is set in a post-scarcity future dystopia in which individuals are forced to undergo mandatory cosmetic surgery so that their appearance matches the culture's beauty ideal. This future world has been created as a direct result of a lab designed organism that destroyed all the world's oil...... the destruction is blamed in their ancestors on greed and discrimination. This future society attempts to remove discrimination by providing a world in which everyone is surgically altered to become the ideal of "pretty".

Uglyville

New Pretty Town

The 'burbs

The Rusty Ruins

The remains of an erstwhile civilization, located just outside the city, often used as a destination for school trips. It is also the place rebellious uglies use to signal to David that they would like to join the Smoke.
