Love is a concept that Shakespeare has some fun with in this play. He examines the role of desire which is often misdirected. Various characters claim to be in passionate love but are really just to self-absorbed to realize that love means sharing and sacrifice. They are in love with the idea of love rather than really experiencing it. The play also is a "gender bender" of sorts. Cesario is rather androgynous and there is a homo-erotic sub-plot involving Sebastian and Antonio.
