She's unreliable because she's nearly insane. Several debates have been held over whther or not the ghosts in the story were real or not because of her craziness. One could argue that the ghosts were not real in the first case and the Governess simply conjured up the story so she could prove herself to the Master. Evidently this is a stupid mindframe but it just goes to show one of the many things wrong with her state of thinking
