In Chapter 23, why is the weather so difficult to bear during this time period?

It is hot and the sun is really bright and granny and mother our fanning themselves and sipping lemonade

It was summer and extremely hot..... there were no fans or air conditioning. All you could do to stay cool was to remain still.
