Please someone help!

I am writing a short story and I am really struggling with it and cannot find anything that inspires me to continue writing. I cannot think of a theme or message for my piece and anything else that i feel will entice the reader to keep reading. If anyone has any ideas that could help me begin i would be most grateful. I do not have any limitations (except my pessimistic mind!) and the word count is 2300. Any ideas of themes/ plots/ characters/ settings would be great!
