How did the captain almost ruin Jim family

The captain put Jim's family in danger, and neglected to pay Jim's family the full amount. Jim's father's death was partially blamed on his worry about finances. He was too afraid of the captain to ask for the money, something Jim believed was partly responsible for his father's premature death.
