I have looked through Chapter 15, but I fail to find the answer to this question. Jim meets Ben Gunn in this chapter and is trying to stay away from Silver. He feels that Ben, who was just an unknown figure in the trees for a brief moment was a better choice as an adversary at that particular moment than Silver who was behind him.
