In the beginning of the book, Cole is angry with everyone. He utilizes his anger in the form of aggression, he abuses people, animals, nature, and whatever else he feels gets in his way. Over the course of the novel, Cole finds out the truth about his anger, where it comes from, how to approach and control it. He learns trust through the people who help him, and he learns that he is NOT invincible. By the end of the story, we meet an entirely new boy. He can empathize and sympathize with the feelings of others, he learns to forgive, and in turn, he can feel remorse and desire forgiveness for his own actions.
