The Spirit Bear nearly kills Cole but heals Cole as well. Explain.

The Spirit bear literally and metaphorically strips Cole of his emotional weight. The Spirit Bear personifies nature: nature which is indifferent to Cole's desires, his manipulations, and his anger. Cole needs to literally alomst die to be reborn again. Cole begins to see that he is not the centre of the universe but merely a small part of it.
