Cole's remorse and guilt shows up increasingly throughout the chapters, especially in his second trip to the island. Cole begins to perform the various dances to better understand his anger. He cooks for Garvey and Edwin without complaining. He lets Peter hit and abuse him to enable Peter to let go of his own hate and frustration.

Cole also lets Peter sleep inside the cabin while he sleeps outside in the cold.
