I think that getting his butt kicked by the bear was essential to Cole's emotional healing. Cole needed to feel vulnerable and impotent. This near death experience was not Cole's destruction but rather his salvation. It taught Cole the feelings of humility and helped him release his anger. So no, I don't feel sorry for him.
