Again, when in the story are you referring to? His behaviour does change by the end of the story.

"Serves him right," Cole mumbled when he was first told of Peter's condition. (pg 8)

Here Cole is angry that Peter never even fought back.

"last year I went out for wrestling. I had to beg my parents to come watch me. It was like they were ashamed of me.'' (28)

Cole voices his frustration over his parents not being there for him.
