Toni Morrison: Essays Irony

President Clinton

The reader knows very well that President Bill Clinton is white. Ironically, Clinton is painted as the first Black president because he is associated with negative things. Unfortunate events such as poverty and suffering are associated with Black people. Satirically, if Black people are given equal opportunities, they can outshine the white society.

The banning of the Little Black Sambo book

Black literature is as beautiful as any other form of writing, given an opportunity to shine. Ironically, the white society values white literature and bans Black literature from the canons. Morrison finds the action of banning the Little Black Sambo sarcastic because there are no proven grounds for its abolishment. According to Morrison, it is fruitful to allow Black literature to thrive so that the current and future generations of Black children can appreciate their culture and ethnicities.

The irony of Morrison’s grandfather

Morrison's grandfather is a father who has tasted the bitter side of racism against Black people throughout his life. For instance, the grandfather recounts how he lost his property to white society on unfair grounds simply because he is a Black man. The grandfather is hopeless and does not see anything good in the future. Despite the grandfather's misfortunes, the reader expects him to give hope to his grandchildren and encourage them to fight for their rights. Ironically, the grandfather uses his experience to discourage Morrison because he tells her that the future is hopeless.

The irony of the white society

According to Morrison's essays, the reader understands that most Black people live in unfortunate conditions because they have no access to equal opportunities. Black people are associated with single parenthood, poverty, and dependence on junky foods. Ironically, the white society fails to comprehend that the root cause of the suffering of Black people is the unequal distribution of opportunities and resources. Otherwise, as demonstrated by Morrison's successful authorship, Black people can do better.
