Why was cornelius appin invited to be a guest of the lady blemley party

Cornelius Appin: Appin is invited to the Blemleys' party because he is supposed to be interesting, but turns out to be rather dull, until he makes Tobermory talk. He has been working on getting animals to talk for quite some time and had no success prior to Tobermory.
