To Say Nothing of the Dog Character List

Ned Henry

The protagonist in the narrative, Ned is an Oxford University historian from the 21st century in the year 2057 who time-travels back in time. He is one of the travelers tasked with retrieving a ‘bird stump’ by Lady Schrapnell with an aim of restoring the Coventry Cathedral. He travels to 1940 to locate the item before the destruction of the cathedral during World War II. Due to the time jumps he suffers from time lag which causes disorientation. He is again tasked with traveling to the Victorian Era to fix the disruption brought on to the time continuum by another time traveler.

Verity Kindle

She is a historian and time-traveler tasked with a mission to travel to the Victorian Era and retrieve information from Tocelyn ‘Tossie’ Mering’s diary regarding the bishop’s bird stump. She is posing as Verity Brown, a distant family member of the Tossie’s family lineage. Verity is Ned’s contact once he travels to the time period to accomplish their unified tasks. But due to the disruption in the time continuum, Verity and Ned have to do multiple attempts at fixing the meddling with history and characters in the time periods.

Lady Schrapnell

A descendant of the aristocrat Tossie, Lady Schrapnell is an influential and rich woman with an obsession to reconstruct the Coventry Cathedral to its last detail. She gives the assignment of the reconstruction to the Oxford history department in the year 2057. She assigns historians to travel back in time to retrieve the bird stump or information surrounding this lost or destroyed artifact.

Terence St. Trewes

He is an Oxford undergraduate who is infatuated with the Mering’s beautiful daughter, Tossie. He meets Ned when he is mistaken as his contact when he travels back to the Victorian era. However, they still share a hired boat down River Thames as they both have different endeavors at the destination. He hopes to impress the Merings in order to court Tossie since he is in fact an aristocrat too with a notable background.

Tocelyn ‘Tossie’ Mering

She is an intelligent and endearing young woman from an aristocratic family in the Victorian period with an erratic and spoiled personality. Her diary accounts about the St. Michael Church, later Coventry Cathedral, inspire her descendant Lady Schrapnell’s quest in the future.
