why was Jem crying in chapter 23?

We never learn that Jem actually cries in Chapter 23. He becomes frustrated while talking to Atticus about juries, and he gets "cloudy" while taling to Scout about why people can't get along. This cloudiness occurs when he tells Scout how he used to be as optimistic as she was about people, but that he no longer felt that way.
