Why is Scout scolded by the teacher? (one of the first chapters)

The teacher, Miss. Caroline, discovers that Scout is proficient past her grade level. She does not approve of Scout reading at home. 

she discovered that I was literate and looked at me with more than faint distaste. Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me any more, it would interfere with my reading.
