why does tom robinson try to break out of jail?

to prove he didn't rape mayella, because he started to believe he did, or?

Tom has simply just given up. He no longer believes he can get justice in a white man's world despite Atticus's heroic efforts. He doesn't understand that he has a good chance on appeal so he makes a run for it and is killed.
