Why does Tom Robinson attempt to escape prison while Atticus tries to appeal his conviction?

Tom Robinson is scared. Despite obvious evidence that he is innocent and the jury knowing that Bob Ewell raped his own daughter, he has still been found guilty. Tom Robinson does not trust the white justice system anymore. He becomes desperate and tries to escape.
