why does mr raymond tell scout and jem about his life?

He tells the two that what's in the paper sack is just soda. He pretends to have a drinking problem so people leave him alone.

Just to add, Mr. Raymond says that other people will never understand that he lives the way he does because he likes it, but drunken stupidity they do understand.
