Why do you suppose a man like Mr.Underwood (who is a known hater of "Negros") was "covering Atticus at the jail?

Despite his prejudice, I think Mr. Underwood a sense of right and wrong. He respects Atticus an the rule of law more than he feels prjudice against Tom Robinson.
