Bob and Mayella Ewell are both responsible for the verdict, although Bob would probably be considered most responsible because his daughters actions were an effect of fear. None-the-less, in my opinion, racism is most responsible for the verdict, something that could be considered a character, as it has a life of its own.

You know what’s going to happen as well as I do, Jack, and I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through it without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb’s usual disease.
