Jem cannot handle Mrs. Dubos's taunts at Atticus. Jem ends up cutting her roses in her yard. Atticus sends Jem to read to Mrs. Dubose to make up for his vandalism. What happens is a mutual understanding between the children and Mrs. Dubose. Both Scout and Jem learn the reasons behind Mrs. Dubose's cantankerous behavior. They also learn what real courage is.
