What purpose did Miss Maudie's character play in the novel?

Miss. Maudie is a mother-figure to Scout and Jem. She holds many of the same positive traits as Atticus does. She is a strong and independent women.Miss Maudie, being white, contrasts most other white women in Maycomb who have traditional, often racist, views on society.
