Atticus takes that the jury took over 4 hours to reach a verdict. Normally any trial where a white person, especially a woman, accuses a black man of something, the jury takes minutes to find him guilty. Also Walter Cunningham's father, leader of the mob that wanted to lynch Tom, was the man who held the jury up. Perhaps things were beginning to change in Maycomb.
