Boo hides gifts for the children in the oak tree, it provided him with a way to communicate and be friends with them from afar. After the children leave a note, Mr.Radley fills the knot-hole with cement.

Nathan Radley, (Boo's brother) fills the knot-hole with cement, because he knows that his brother Boo was hiding gifts for Jem and Scout. At the end, Scout and Jem see Boo as a real living human being. Scout isn't scared of Boo anymore. Now that Boo saved the children, Jem and Scout realize that Boo isn't what they thought he was.
