What is significance of Lee's use if light and dark in this chapter?

Besides skin colour, Lee uses light and dark to reflect mood, tone and hope. Tom is in a dark cell. It is also dark outside. Atticus brings a solitary lamp, it represents a beacon of hope in a figuratively and literally dark time. THe darkness is the ignorance of hate and the small light is the wisdom of equality and what is right.
