To Kill a Mockingbird

What does this mean? : “One corner of the yard, though, bewildered Maycomb. Against the fence, in a line, were six chipped-enamel slop jars holding brilliant red geraniums...People said they were Mayella Ewell’s”(Lee 218).

Mayella has an extremely harsh life. Her father is an alcoholic who abuses her in terrible ways. The garbage dump they live beside is a metaphor of her life. Mayella however keeps geraniums. This shows us a side to Mayella that reflects her humanity and need for something beautiful in her life. There is some beauty inside her that remains intact despite her father's aberrations. The flowers represent something beautiful in Mayella that is not dead yet.
