Atticus is appealing to the men's humanity in hopes that they will conider the enormity of their actions as individuals rather than a mob of "wild animals". Atticus's question is dangerous because this is a mob and they are hungry for violence. Atticus is challenging the mob and that is a dangerous thing to do.
