what does scout mean when she says, ''by the time we reached our front steps walter had forgotten he was a cunnigham''?

First, Scout is a girl. What "she" means is that Walter immediately felt welcome and at home. Normally, the Cunninghams wouldn't have socialized with the Finches. None-the-less, after initially feeling a bit out of place, Walter fits right in.
