-Jem is angsty, moody, prone to prolonged silences broken by angry outbursts. He distances himseldf from people including Scout. Atticus and Cal explain it is just Jem growing up.

-Scout and Jem see Calpurnia's church. They experience a little racism via Lula but also see how much their father is respected by the black community. They also realize how little people do with to be content.

-They understand much more about Calpurnia's life, the sacrifices she makes, her intelligence and how much she cares for them.
