All Tom Robinson is guilty of is feeling sorry for a white girl. Mayella Ewell tries her best to lure Tom into her shack through vague requests for help. Tom Robinson, who knows better than to have any interactions with a white girl, feels bad for Mayella. He knows the squalid conditions that she lives in. Tom is aware that her father is abusive, alcoholic and frequently absent. Unfortunately to a jury of white men, the word of any white girl is damning to poor Tom Robinson. Tom also had a minor felony in his past(nothing to do with this case) which Atticus discloses right away. In the end Tom Robinson stands as the innocent mockingbird who never had a chance.
